Which Churches are Open or Locked?
Warwickshire does get a lot of bad press for locked churches amongst the churchcrawling community, and this is generally down to the immobility of most church doors situated to the north of Coventry. The irony is that the south of the county has a higher than average percentage of churches that are open and welcoming to visitors and the Coventry Diocese is to be commended for it's efforts in trying to improve access to others by publicising the open hours, however limited, of a number of churches on their new Divine Inspiration website which aims to encourage more visitors to enjoy the pleasures of these buildings.
The main problem is the northern part of the county which largely falls under the jurisdiction of the Birmingham Diocese, where open churches are not only a rarity but generally discouraged. Of course security is an ever present worry and one can forgive people for not feeling they can take the risk of leaving their precious buildings open and unguarded, although recent research by insurers is inclining more towards that being the better option (a locked church is more likely to be left unguarded, and more damage will be done through break ins, only for the culprit to find little worth taking as has been reported in so many cases, whereas if the church had been open....)
Keyholder notices for locked churches used to be more common, but fewer bother with them now. It is always preferable to know that visitors are welcome to explore a church and who to contact in the event, otherwise if a door doesn't yield one is left searching for phonenumbers of likely individuals who could help, and in the hope they might be willing to do, which cannot be taken for granted.
Churches listed below are coloured according to their respective accessibility to visitors (locking statuses are changeable, often depending on incumbent, so of course can only be given as a general rule and therefore can never be totally reliable). Churches in blue are normally open (or at least I've found them that way), those in red may require making appointments to get inside.
