Brownsover - St Michael
Tucked away on the northern outskirts of Rugby, Brownsover's ancient church
of St Michael is a well kept secret, a very modest building of a simple
two cell format without other appendages (no tower or porch, the bell is hung
from a projection over the main door!).
Heavily restored by Gilbert Scott, the facade looks entirely Victorian and
one might initially wonder why the CCT would take this one on, but inside this
simple church is an Aladdin's cave of woodwork, including 16th century screen
and decorative panels, clearly continental carving on the pulpit and an organ
from St John's College Cambridge.
Not much else to say about the simple interior itself, the assembled woodwork
make it more like an antique salvage showroom; the east window has some slightly
anaemic Victorian glass.
The church is normally kept locked but the key is available from the
reception of the Victorian gothic Brownsover Hall Hotel over the
road.
