Hillmorton - English Martyrs
Of all the church summaries on this site, this will be the most difficult one for me to write. It is the church I am most familiar with, having been a baptised in here in 1974 and being a regular attendant ever since. I attended school next door and thus the sight of this copper-roofed brick cube of a building with it's swathes of dalle de verre stained glass has been a landmark throughout my entire life.
But now it is also a source of some pain, as the church proper has been closed since 2010, and following some structural problems the beautiful windows that inspired me throughout childhood are being ripped out to be replaced by double glazing, which will leave a colourless box in place of the church I knew, a tragedy in the making.
